Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about what the toolkit does, what it costs, and what it does not do.

Start free

Self Employment Toolkit is a web app for sole proprietors and single-member LLCs who file Schedule C. It tracks mileage, time, expenses, and invoices, and exports a year-end Schedule C bundle. Free covers unlimited mileage trips, 10 time entries a month, and unlimited clients, expenses, and invoices. Pro is $6 a month or $48 a year and adds unlimited time entries, AI receipt reading, email-to-expense forwarding, mileage export, the Schedule C year-end bundle, and the quarterly tax estimator.

Plans and pricing

How much does Self Employment Toolkit cost?
Free costs nothing and has no time limit. Pro is $6 a month or $48 a year. There are no client caps, invoice caps, or per-user fees.
What is the difference between Free and Pro?
Free covers unlimited mileage trips, 10 time entries a month, and unlimited clients, expenses, and invoices. Pro is $6 a month or $48 a year and adds unlimited time entries, AI receipt reading, email-to-expense forwarding, mileage export, the Schedule C year-end bundle, and the quarterly tax estimator.
Is there a free trial of Pro?
Yes. Every new account gets 30 days of Pro, with no card required. When the trial ends, you stay on Free with all your data unless you choose to subscribe.
Can I cancel or get a refund?
You can cancel any time. A first Pro subscription has a 14-day refund window. The refund policy page has the details.
Who is it for?
One self-employed person filing Schedule C: freelancers, consultants, contractors, and single-member LLCs taxed as sole proprietors. It does not do payroll, inventory, or double-entry accounting.

Switching and importing

Can I import from QuickBooks?
Yes, expenses and mileage. Expenses import from a QuickBooks transactions export on the Expenses tab, and trips from a QuickBooks mileage export on the Mileage tab. Both show a preview with duplicates marked before anything saves. Clients and invoices are entered by hand.
Which mileage apps can I import from?
MileIQ, Everlance, TripLog, Driversnote, and QuickBooks exports, or any CSV or Excel mileage log. The import matches the columns for you.
Can I import bank or card statements?
On Pro, yes. Upload a statement file and match its lines against expenses, income, and invoices you have already logged, or add what is missing. On any plan, you can import a bank or card export as expenses on the Expenses tab.
When is the best time to switch?
January, before your first business transaction of the year, so the whole tax year is in one record.

Mileage

Does it track mileage automatically?
Not yet. You start and end each trip, and the route distance is filled in for you. Mileage is unlimited on the free plan.
What mileage rate does it use?
The IRS standard business rate in force on the date of each trip. For 2026 that is 72.5 cents a mile through June 30 and 76 cents a mile from July 1.
Is the mileage log good enough for the IRS?
Each trip records the date, start and end addresses, and miles, with a notes field and client for the business purpose. Those are the things the IRS expects a mileage log to show. Log trips when they happen; a log rebuilt months later is weaker evidence.

Expenses and receipts

Can it read my receipts?
On Pro, yes. Photograph or upload a receipt, or forward a receipt email, and the amount, vendor, date, and category are filled in for you to check.
How does email forwarding work?
On Pro, forward a receipt email to your receipts address from your account email. To forward from another address, add it as a forwarding address in Settings and confirm it.
Are expense categories tied to Schedule C?
Yes. Each category maps to a Schedule C line, so the year-end export is already in form order.

Invoices and time

Can I send invoices?
Yes, on every plan with no caps. Invoices can pull in tracked hours, trips, and reimbursable expenses, go out by email as PDFs, repeat monthly, and send reminders when they are overdue. Clients cannot pay by card inside the app yet.
How does time tracking work?
Run a timer or type in hours against a client with their hourly rate, then roll the hours into an invoice. Free includes 10 time entries a month; Pro is unlimited.

Taxes

Does it file my tax return?
No. It exports a Schedule C year-end bundle as PDF and CSV for your tax software or preparer.
Does it estimate quarterly taxes?
Yes, on Pro. The estimator works from the income and expenses you have logged this year. It is a planning number, not tax advice.
Is this tax advice?
No. The toolkit keeps records and does arithmetic. For advice about your situation, talk to a tax professional.

Your data

Can I get my data out?
Yes. Expenses export to CSV on any plan. Mileage export and the Schedule C bundle are on Pro.
How is my account protected?
You can turn on two-factor authentication with an authenticator app, or sign in with a passkey. Tax ID numbers you store for clients are encrypted.
Do you sell my data?
No. The privacy policy covers what is collected and why.

Start the new year with a clean book

The tax year starts January 1, so the cleanest time to switch is before your first trip of the year. Every new account gets 30 days of Pro, no card required, so you can import what you have and try every feature. After that, keep Pro for $6 a month or $48 a year, or stay on Free.
